Closing Date for Applications: 25th January 2021

The Black British Dance Platform is collaboration between Serendipity and Dance4, with the ambition to support and nurture dance artists from the African and African Caribbean Diaspora, who are based in England, with a desire to present work internationally.

Through the Black British Dance Platform 2021, Serendipity and Dance4 will showcase three-four independent artists/companies as part of Let’s Dance International Frontiers 2021 supported through our (Dance4’s) Dance from England programme. This platform and partnership will lead to increased international connectivity and visibility of Black British Dance.

The Black British Dance Platform is part of Serendipity and Dance4’s joint commitment to affect long-term change in dance through the leadership of both organisations. This collaboration supports their aims to cultivate a sector that is representative of contemporary Britain, broadens the presence of independent artists internationally and enriches international perspectives into England’s dance ecology.

 

Successful applicants will receive:

A performance fee of up to £1,500.

Travel, accommodation and rehearsal space, to be negotiated.

The opportunity to showcase your work in May 2021 as part of Let’s Dance International Frontiers at Curve Theatre Studio in Leicester.

 

Dance From England development opportunities:

A paid visit to an international delegation in the UK in 2021 to research international contexts for your work.

A paid invitation to join the decision-making process for the 2022 edition of the platform.

Access to a bursary of up to £1000 for onward touring outside of the UK.

Advocacy and mentorship from Serendipity and Dance4.

Advice and guidance on pitching and marketing your work from Serendipity and Dance4.

Opportunities to build an industry network during the wider festival programme.

 

Timeline:

Monday 25 January 2021: Deadline for applications

Monday 1 February 2021 (TBC): Expected decision made on applications

February 2021: Announcement of Selected artists

February – May 2021: Mentorship sessions with Serendipity and Dance4

Friday 30 April 2021: Performance as part of the Black British Dance Platform

Saturday 1 May 2021: In Conversation with Serendipity and Dance4 (for venues and promotors)

June 2021: Next Steps meeting with Serendipity and Dance4

August 2021: International Delegation Event TBC

November 2021: Selection for Black British Dance Platform 2022

 

To be eligible you must:

Be an independent artist (non-NPO).

Be based in England.

Be from the African and African Caribbean Diaspora (for companies, the company lead and approximately 60% of company members should be from the African and African Caribbean Diaspora).

Be committed to working responsibly within Serendipity and partners’ COVID-secure measures.

Complete the Black British Dance Platform application form and monitoring from.

Submit documentation of the proposed and previous works with your application. (video footage is preferred but other forms, such as photography, will be considered)

Be available for performance on Wednesday 5 May 2021, and participation in an In Conversation on 6 May.

Propose a complete dance work that is between 25-45 minutes long.

Propose work that can practically be realised in Curve Theatre’s Studio. In terms technical requirements, sight lines and number of company members (approximately 1-5 company members is ideal for small-mid touring).

 

Selection Criteria
A culturally representative panel, including artistic leadership from Serendipity and Dance4, independent artists and international partners, will make the selection.

Criteria for selection is based on:

Quality – Work with a clear sense of purpose and integrity that has the highest artistic performance standards.

Engagement – Work that has the ability to interact and engage audiences through a clear and successful conceptual framework.

Technique – Strong demonstration of dance style or genre and chosen techniques. If applicable, with accomplished self-development of approaches.

Innovation – Work that pushes the boundaries of dance and choreographic practice, platforming pioneering artists and ideas.

Suitability – Work that is practically suited to the venue and opportunity.

Please also consider completing a monitoring form. The form has the option to “prefer not to say” or the option to leave the question blank and is optional. It supports our Equality and Diversity Action Plan which includes addressing underrepresentation and how we will use our resources in the future.
