Maria Popova is a UK based freelance artist with a background in visual arts who is currently studying dance and choreography in further education. Her pratice is rooted in improvisation and interdisciplinary collaboration as a means of exploring the moving body in relation to other artforms.
Maria is interested in the body and its orientation in space and how her practice is able to open up dialogue between artforms, exploring the relationships and tensions with interdisciplinary practice.
Maria is a co-founder of combined: Improvisation Collective, who produce improvisation based works by encouraging new partnerships between Leeds-based artists and graduates to encourage artistic exchange. Maria also works as a widening participation ambassador for Leeds Beckett University and front of house staff for Yorkshire Dance.
Her current work Page 127: I am not a dancer (working title) is a movement installation piece that seeks to transform the temporal space. This will be performed at iC4C in February as part of UK Young Artists City Takeover.
