SHIFT Intensive

Sustaining Practice Summer Intensive
We were exceptionally pleased with the success of Sustaining Practice 2007. The four day intensive attracted artists and practitioners from the region and further a field. We would like to thank everyone involved for making this event possible and we look forward to planning Sustaining Practice 2008 in the near future.

SHIFT Improvisation

We think improvisation is a key tool for artists and practitioners. Over the last six months we have been curating a programme of improvisation sessions with some of the best facilitators in the sector, we’ve also been talking to local practitioners about how we can develop this part of SHIFT.

To help us do this we have invited Miriam Keye, an artist currently based in Leicester, to support us in the initial stages of shaping this aspect of the SHIFT programme. Miriam has a keen interest and strong experience in this area, having recently returned from an extended period of time at Earthdance. With all this in mind, we have a new focus for you to take advantage of.

Open Space is your chance to come to our studio, meet with like-minded people, explore ideas, collaborate and learn from one another. We open up our dance space for an entire weekend for you to come together and explore aspects of improvisation.

Following on from the improv session in December, Miriam Keye, an artist many of you probably know already, formerly based in Leicester now in Cumbria, is supporting us in the initial stages of shaping this aspect of SHIFT. Miriam has a keen interest and strong experience in this area.

For this weekend artist and performer Anne-Marie Culhane will join Miriam during the day. This is a great opportunity to work with yet another experienced artist open to your questions and suggestions.

Anne-Marie is an artist, performer and creative catalyst working in response to specific environments and landscapes in urban and rural areas and wider ecological issues. Her work is rooted in a collaborative, sustainable and interdisciplinary approach.

SHIFT Graduate Programme

Watch this space… We will be working closely with the regions universities to create a unique graduate programme specifically tailored to meet your needs. Some of the ideas we have come up with so far are apprenticeships, graduates linking with national networks, specific graduate workshops including Open Doors, Information advice and support on some of those everyday basics like building a CV and 1-2-1 sessions with a member of the Dance4 team and lots more to help you bridge the gap between education and the professional dance industry.

If you would like to find out more then why not join up for the Artists Forum at The Art Organisation on Saturday 15 December (see details under Artists Forum’s) or our regular contemporary class at Clarendon College. (see details under SHIFT classes)

SHIFT Associate Artists

Rebecca Hart

" I have over 10 years experience working as a dance teacher, advisor, choreographer, peroformer and examiner in dance.

Recently I have been conducting research and developed creative practice that explores the relationship between dance and mathmatics, including investigating the links between the choreographic form and mathmatical concepts. A project called '1st Equation' brought together some of these ideas in a new dance piece and series of workshops in schools and the community. I am currently developing this performance piece for platform events with a view to touring it around the east midlands.

I am very keen to develop my choreographic practice as an associate to Dance4 in particular as I live in Nottingham and I am committed to creating work for the region.  Dance4 will provide me with an inspiring and supportive environment in which I can continue to question, develop and promote my work.”

Matthias Sperling

“It’s a real pleasure to be joining Dance4 as Associate Artist.   After working with Random Dance for a number of years, I’m now developing my own choreographic work, and Dance4’s focus on questioning choreographic practice makes it a brilliant and challenging environment in which to do that.

I’m originally from Canada and have been based in London since 1997.  Over the past year I’ve become an increasingly frequent visitor to the East Midlands region for a series of exciting projects.  Most recently, Dance4 presented the premiere of my newest work, Riff, at nottdance07.  Created in part at Dance4’s studio, this solo explores the idea of sampling movement and choreography, aiming to create an original work entirely out of sampled material.  Earlier this year, I also worked with secondary school students in Nottingham to create a site-specific performance celebrating the re-opening of Old Market Square, inspired by an encounter with Austrian choreographer Willi Dorner.

My varied past experience includes working with companies including Matthew Bourne’s Adventures in Motion Pictures and Kerry Nicholls Dance Company, as well as a wide range of teaching experience and work on the films Billy Elliot and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  After meeting through the Jerwood Bank Project 2006, Siobhan Davies generously agreed to mentor me in my creative work and I’m very excited to be participating in a creation with her in 2009.

I look forward to deepening my association with Dance4 and the many exciting strands of activity happening in the region.  My plans include creating and performing new work, engaging in exchanges with other East Midlands-based artists and initiating creative projects with schools and communities in the region”

Shane Shambhu

“I’m a British-Indian dancer, actor and choreographer based in the East Midlands.  I have worked on individual projects with an array of artists, as well as performing with numerous companies including: Shobana Jeyasingh and Complicité.  I was very proud to be awarded the Bonnie Bird Choreography Award in 2006.

I create work using theatre and an individual contemporary style of Bharatanatyam resulting in a unique, physically and emotionally engaging Dance Theatre style.  In my time as Associate Artist at Dance4 I hope that I can develop support from schools, colleges, community venues and other professional artists in the region by raising awareness of the British-Asian identity, of my work. I am also aiming to increase the profile of my work, with the aspiration of my choreographic work being seen nationally and internationally.”

Katie Green

“After reading English at Cambridge, I graduated from London Contemporary Dance School in 2006, winning the Pyramid Award for Contemporary Dance. I formed green bean dance with the support of the award and I now work in London and the East Midlands.

I regularly perform and teach in learning environments from primary school to professional level and continue to choreograph work for theatres and site-specific projects. I have been nominated for the New Trends prize at the Burgos International Choreography Competition (2007), and green bean dance was most recently invited to perform in Touch Wood at The Place (London) in September 2007. Forthcoming projects include a choreographic commission for the Bloomsbury Festival, and performances of The Faerie Queene at the Lilian Baylis Theatre with Cilgwyn Theatre Company in December 2007.

During my time at Dance4, I hope to develop working relationships within the region in which I grew up. I want to spend time in Nottingham creating new live dance work and collaborating with local artists. I am also looking forward to engaging with the SHIFT community in classes, workshops, open rehearsals, and work in progress ‘sharings’. As a result of this opportunity for sharing and collaboration, I will also be putting together a show for the Edinburgh Fringe 2008, with a view to touring the work across regional venues in 2008.”
