Artist Q & A...

What was the first piece of live work you ever went to see?

I saw a lot of performances as a child. My mum was always taking me to see stuff. I think one of the first dance works I saw (as a toddler) was a work by Rosemary Butcher, I don't know which piece it was but apparently I liked it.

What was the first professional experience you had in the arts sector?

My first paid job was as a dancer for some research for a little known company called 'conundrum arts in motion' it was up in Liverpool as part of a choreo-lab that was happening there. It was great experience even though the piece was never developed.

Who or what inspires you?

I am very inspired by the people around me. They affect me in a very concrete way. I observe and learn most from people who are engaged with their work and who have a love for what they do.

What do you love about making work?

I love the process of taking something that exists only as a feeling, image or urge and realising it into something that can communicate with many different people. I enjoy the frustration and success and the failure of it. I am attracted by the complete experience

What is the meaning of life?

To get on with living and to fully experience everything you can in the limited time we get.

How do you feel when an audience is watching your work?

I have many different feelings when I present my work to an audience. I watch the audience quite closely to understand as much as I can of the experience they are having. After all the moment of communication when a work goes on stage is the point of working in the performing arts. I am really fulfilled be this moment and despite the other emotions that come and go dependent on the success of the work in that moment I am always satisfied just to observe interaction

What are you working on at the moment?

I'm currently working as a dancer for a company in Brussels on a piece that will premiere in October just prior to me showing my work at nottdance09. I am also working on the duet that I'll be showing at nottdance and am in the process of setting up two new projects for next year.

What is your favourite kind of tea?

Actually its just changed from rooibos to white tea, to which I am currently addicted, If anyone knows of an addiction help program please contact me.

nottdance is...

the only festival in England with a truly European focus. It's a great opportunity for me and I am really happy to be part of it. Its also where my family are from so its an introduction to my work for them also.
