Artists / Les SlovaKs (Slovakia / Belgium)

Les SlovaKs is a collective made of five independant, energetic dancers coming from Slovakia : Milan Herich, Peter Jasko, Anton Lachky, Milan Tomasik and Martin Kilvady. All five of them are living and working in Belgium. They constitute a professional dance company focused on teaching, creating and performing.

Milan H, Peter, Anton and Milan T started dancing very early. At the age of five, before even meeting each other, they shared the stage at the Vychodna Folk Festival. At that time nobody expected that during the next 20 years they would share the same life; education, room, fun, common games, stage frights and currently home. After arriving in Belgium they met Martin, with whom working and living was a pleasure from the beginning. The advantages of this group are very close friendships and a wide spectrum of activities and interests.

In 2003 they separated in order to gain new experiences, to further explore art and contemporary dance and to go deeper into the caves of knowledge. Collaborating with artists from different origins is a way to find a language through art that communicates with different people in society. In August 2006, they regrouped and established Les SlovaKs Dance Collective.

Now the goal of Les SlovaKs is to find themselves again. The decision to work together has a rich history. The combination of life and professional experiences (common participation in projects of different artists), global vision, social habits and close friendships (from the time of sharing the rooms in dormitory till now living in the same house), suggests much about the emerging quality of their long term vision.

Dance, dance, dance! That is our passion. We wanted to create a performance that is physical, where we could speak through the body and movement. We also wanted to express what we experienced as a collective in daily life and the place each individual has in it. We address ourselves to everybody, different generations and backgrounds. we also wanted to explore and express our Slovak roots through rhythm, song, joy of dancing together as a group and as an individual. Finally, Dance and music are essential to us. During the performance, there is a true exchange between the two. Dance feeds the music and music enriches the dance.
