Duration: 1hr approx

For this year’s festival where choice is the central premise, we also wanted to give artists themselves the opportunity to explore making artistic choices live on stage. We have invited two very experienced and contrasting international artists to do this exclusively for nottdance08: Israel Galvan and Miguel Pereira.

Many artists use improvisation as a tool for creating work, whilst other artists choose to focus on presenting improvised work in a live context.  In a sense this evening is neither and both.  We are inviting you and the artists to be part of an event where there is no pre-destined outcome.

Israel Galvan is a highly respected choreographer and performer whose work, rooted in Flamenco heritage, is partly improvised to the rhythm of the music. Israel’s work is categorized as  ‘contemporary’ Flamenco as he turns the historical aesthetic rules of this artform up side down. He is currently interested in investigating the solo form. Therefore working without musicians, listening exclusively to an inner music score, for this event Israel aims to reveal a personal dialogue: how he navigates through his body memory, how he composes with his surroundings, hoping to surprise us and himself along the way. This is a chance to share a unique moment with this truly charismatic and powerful artist.

Galvan is seductive without trying to be, and if this is what new flamenco means, bring it on” New York Times

Miguel Pereira returns to Nottingham after showing 8th May 2003, Lakeside Arts Centre, in nottdance03. He is an acclaimed artist and performer, who seeks to question the rules of performance, often choosing to provoke accepted codes both in the making and presenting of work. He regularly presents work in the UK at the Arnolfini Theatre and worked with Transitions Dance Company, Laban, on their last repertoire as seen at Lakeside in Spring 2008. His contribution to this evening should be an unexpected unruly experience.
