O’Driscoll Collective presents Crabs in a Barrel

“When you’re willing to just do something because ‘that’s what men do’, even though it doesn’t really make sense to you – that’s toxic to me.”

CJ Webley, co-Artistic Director of Light Post Theatre Company, interviewed in February 2021.

Exploring themes of toxic masculinity, stereotypes and disruption – Crabs in a Barrel will be Jamaal’s first 40-minute piece, commissioned by DanceXchange, The Place and Artists 4 Artists.

Crabs in a Barrel brings together three dancers with a range of movement specialisms, alongside a bespoke sound score – using spoken word that has been inspired by research & interviews with black creatives in the Midlands.

Using Jamaal’s signature Breakin’ style, Crabs in a Barrel builds on the success of his previous work ONE% and solidifies his creative voice as one to watch in the Hip Hop Theatre sector.

Yami Löfvenberg presents A Work in Progress

Dsc XThis new untitled piece is the autobiographical storytelling and choreographic work highlighting Yami’s personal story around transracial adoption and her mental health.

Born in Colombia and adopted at the age of 3 by white parents in Sweden Yami experienced a loss of her identity. In 2013 she meet her biological mother, where she thought she would finally feel complete and have a happy ending that would fix everything. Instead what she found was emptiness and the description of this feeling was a sort of white noise she couldn’t place.

Through a darkly comedic story written, narrated and performed by Yami, original musical score and movement she physically shows us what went on inside her brain at the most important moment in her life and asks us, viewers, the question what if there isn’t a happy ending?

This work uncovers the marginalized conversation around the impacts of adoption, hidden trauma, stigmatisation and the media’s damaging portrayal of adoption stories.
